Materials
The last thing that you are going to want to do is spend money on a new design every few years. If you bite the bullet and dish out the extra money on a superior design from the start, you might not have to buy one ever again. What we noticed when conducting our research was the aluminum frames were typically the most durable. There were some reviews that we read that claimed that they had their aluminum designs for over 20 years. The downside to aluminum, however, if that it is often a lot heavier than other options. The next best option we found was polyethylene. This material is like a very hard plastic that is typically coated with a UV protectant to keep it from becoming brittle in the sun. This material might not last quite as long as aluminum, but it is typically more affordable and doesn’t weigh as much.
So you should consider where you will be using this canoe for a majority of your adventures and determine what material you would like your canoe to be dependent on where you will be using it. If you are planning on doing portaging you may want to go with a polyurethane canoe as it will be lightweight and won't be too heavy while portaging. If you are looking for something that you want to keep at the cottage and won't be carrying to often than look at aluminum.
Style
If you intend on buying something that will hold up for years of nautical adventures, you want to make sure that it looks sharp. We made sure to select designs that offered more than one color options (most brands offered general colors such as green, red, and blue). We also wanted to make sure that we selected designs that were not only sharp, but that also had a shape that would allow it to cut through water easily. Typically, narrow canoes were made to cut the ware more quickly, which will allow the user to generate more speed. For us, it was more important to select designs that were just a little bit wider to promote stability. They might not move as quickly through the water, but they will be less likely to tip over if you like to stand up while fishing.
Features
As with any other type of gear, we like features that will make life a little bit easier. Sun Dolphin is an excellent example of providing extra features. Their models not only offer things such as a cup holder and places to put your keys and phone, but the center seat on almost all of their designs opens up to be a built-in cooler. Features such as this make it easy to be out on the water all day without the need to head to the shoreline to load up on supplies. We also liked Old Town’s use of a webbed nylon seat. These seats are perfect for long rides because they are soft, limit the number of pressure points, and will dry quickly if they become wet.
Value
There was a fine line that we walked in the cost department. While we wanted to ensure that we selected products that were affordable, we also wanted to include some of the higher end designs- such as those constructed from aluminum- that would truly stand the test of time. It’s important to note that if you want to buy a good quality boat that will leave you on top of the water instead of beneath it- you are going to have to dish out a pretty decent chunk of change when looking into investing in a canoe.
