Criteria Used for Evaluation
Style
It seems as though in this day and age that when we have the opportunity to customize something, we do it. Whether it's a monogram or simply a great color, it's always good to feel confident about your purchase and show a bit of your personal style. Laptops are no exception. In this section, we commented upon if the exterior of the laptop was shiny or matte, black or white, rigid or smooth and if it is easily packed. While this may be one of the least important aspects of a rugged laptop, we still wanted to include it.
Features
Working remotely on a computer that doesn’t run as well as your desktop computer can be incredibly stressful. We made sure that each product hosted a respected processor such as Intel. If the CPU is slow and chugs along at a frustrating pace, it will make getting work done that much harder. We made sure to try and avoid that possible annoyance by taking a look at the processor to ensure that it is up to our standards. We also listened to what previous users had to say about the performance of a product. If it ran slow and crashes constantly, we made sure to take note. Withstanding high heats and rainfall is important- but if you can’t even check your email, then it is nothing more than an expensive paperweight.
Additionally, in this section, we focused on the USB and/or other plug-ins that are present.
Battery Life
When you are out traveling far from home- the reveal of an open electrical outlet resembles an oasis in a dry and brutal desert. Worrying about battery life is something that no user likes to contend with. That’s why we made sure to check to see how much life one charged battery would provide users. Some of the easier designs that run off of Chrome OS and do not have that many programs installed can hold a steady charge for up to 12 hours. Plus, many users have reported that battery performance doesn’t wither with every charge. From the day that you unpack it to a year later, these products should still offer you about 10-12 hours of power. When you get into the more powerful designs that run a Windows OS and have over 100GB of hard drive storage- the battery life begins to dwindle to around 3-5 hours. This isn’t ideal, but considering that amount of things that you can do on these models, it might be worth the limited battery life to suit your needs.
Durability
While we don’t condone actually throwing things at your computers, we did want to make sure that the products we selected would be able to take a beating. While you are out there on the trails, the last thing that you want to worry about is the status of your gear. We have all been there before- feeling the need to constantly check to make sure the screen isn’t cracked after an unfortunate tumble. While conducting our research, we make sure to select products that had a tough enough outer shell to be able to absorb most falls. Another thing that we felt was important was the ability to repair them. Sometimes you might hit it at just a right angle that makes something inside break. For many of these rugged laptops, you almost have to disassemble the entire unit just to replace one component. We tried to keep our eyes on products that were easy to repair. Most brands making this list can have individual components replaced simply by lifting up the keyboard.
